THE AREA

Lancaster is situated in one of the most interesting, varied and beautiful areas in England, where there there is a genuine quality of choice rarely to be found so close together. Whether Blackpool, the Leighton Moss reedbeds and its rich bird life, a Morecambe Bay sunset a cross-Bay walk, the beauty of the Trough of Bowland,

access to the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales, including Ingleton and the finest waterfalls walk in England, inland waterways and the steam-engined splendour of Settle to Carlisle, mountain biking or road riding….. it is all here for you.

HISTORY

Henry IV was the first Monarch to hold the title of the Duchy of Lancaster, as does the Queen to this day. The town's great wealth and signature was founded on West Indies trading in the 1700's and, a century later, on the new industry of linoleum manufacture which created one of the wealthiest men in the world, Lord Ashton. Fine architecture, the beautifully preserved Georgian quay, the tidal River Lune, and one of England's greatest Follies make for a memorable backdrop to your visit.
